Interview with the Head of HR at the Nigerian Stock Exchange

I’m REALLY excited to share this week’s masterclass with you because I got to sit with the amazing Pai Gamde, the current Head of HR at the Nigerian Stock Exchange. I had a fantastic time with her and I learnt soo much.

As usual, I went in there with a bunch of questions, as part of my quest to understand things from the perspective of the professionals that are in charge of the recruitment process. Why are young job seekers in Nigeria finding it soo hard to get on the employment ladder? It’s almost a general consensus that our graduates unemployable, but what can be done to bridge the gap between where they are and where they need to be?


Job seekers must be very strategic in the way they approach the job hunt, and I firmly believe that one of the best ways to do this is ensure that we give recruiters what they want and present ourselves in a way that make us attractive to them. Andwhat better way to find out what they look for than to ask them directly? 😀

Pai shared a LOT of information and insight with regards the problems she sees on a daily basis with job-seekers, ranging from how they communicate (or don’t) on their CV’s, to personal grooming (I was very shocked at the revelations she made about this) and performance at interviews.

    Hey Omo! I enjoyed every bit of the interview! It’s was so COMPREHENSIVE and was an EYE OPENER!

    Errrrm! The issue of that money thing ehn, e get as e be ooo Omo. I remember back in NYSC camp in 2013, a man came to give us a lecture on how to prepare for the challenges of the Labour Market. Someone asked a question on how best to answer the question

    “how much would you want us to pay you”?

    He said and I quote,

    “Never tell your interviewers an amount. You can simply tell them money is important but the job is more important and you’re only interested in adding value.”

    Now, I’ve also heard other HR experts say that you should be specific when answering that question. According to them, it shows that you have conducted your research and you know the monetary value attached to that office in the Labour Market.

    Aunty Omo, that question get as e be biko!

    LOL! Abayomi thanks for your comment, it’s always a pleasure to hear your perspectives.

    Now regarding the money question, both the guy who gave you the lecture and the HR experts you’ve heard from are right. That might sound confusing, but there is an actual way to go about salary negotiations without getting the short end of the stick (i.e. under-pricing yourself), and without putting recruiters off by making them think you are being ‘money-hungry’ (i.e. by pricing yourself out entirely).
